Psst...There's a Beer Run This Sunday with the SF Hash House Harriers and Strike Brewing

Espirit Park will be gound zero for the SF Hash Hash Harrier's
Beer Run this Sunday
There's going to be doing a Beer Week run on Sunday the 9th at 1pm.  It will be led by the SF Hash Harriers at Esprit Park in San Francisco.    You can find more details on the SF Hash House Harriers page here.  There will be Strike Beer which is reason enough to go, even for those who don't run at all.

Unfortunately, yours truly will be sitting in an airport at that time to get on a plane bound for Salt Lake, UT, where things like Beer Runs and Hashing are not all that common.

For all those taking part, run strong and drink well!

The 4th Annual SF Beer Week Beer Run Heads to Los Gatos

Photo by Bryan Kolesar of The Brewlounge
In collaboration with C.B. Hannegan's and Strike Brewing, the 4th Annual SF Beer Week Beer Run heads to the South Bay.  Join us to celebrate the unlikely union of beer and running in this unique SF Beer Week event to benefit Autism Speaks and 2nd Harvest Food Bank.

When: February 10th, 2013 at 11:00 am

Where:  C.B. Hannegan's at 208 Bachman Avenue in downtown Los Gatos.

What's the course?:  We'll start at C.B. Hannegan's, head to the Los Gatos Trail, then turn north, run the trail to Vasona Park to the Vasona Park Dam and then turn around and go back to C.B. Hannegan's.  That's 5 miles total, but if you want to run a little less (or more!) that's OK.   In the spirit of the beer run, finishing times or places will not be kept.  No entry fee either!

About the run:  It's a run, not a race!  Please obey traffic signs, yield right of way to vehicles and peacefully co-exist with other runners, bikers and walkers on the course.  We may employ a wave start if necessary for crowd control.

What happens afterward:  Stick around and enjoy a Strike Beer and food at C.B. Hannegan's and meet Strike Brewmaster Drew Erlich.  They'll be a post-run raffle to support Autism Speaks and, in memory of the late beer writer Bill Brand, 2nd Harvest Food Bank.

Raffle prizes:  Both Runner's Factory of Los Gatos and Running Revolution of Campbell have pledged a $25 gift certificate for the raffle.  In addition, the  Runner's Factory will give all runners who mention the beer run a 20% discount on any purchase.  In addition, both Adventure Sports Journal and Strike Brewing are providing T-shirts and other items for the raffle.
Raffle tickets are a dollar each, six for $5 with the raffle proceeds benefitting Autism Speaks and 2nd Harvest Food Bank.  You must be present to win.

Tell your friends...the Beer Run Facebook page can be found here.

See you there!

Wednesday Evening Beer Runs at Strike Brewing

I'm pleased to announce current reigning Beer of the Month champ Strike Brewing is hosting Wednesday evening beer runs in Los GatosLori Beveridge, who is a Lululemon Running Ambassador, leads the group, which starts their run at 6:30 at lobby of Los Gatos Lodge for a 3-4 mile jaunt through downtown Los Gatos. As the days get longer, they'll be enough light at that time to start heading onto the Los Gatos Creek Trail, a great running trail that winds through fitness conscious Los Gatos.

"It was kind of fun running as a big group through town while everyone is eating dinner and staring at us like we’re crazy," explains Jenny Lewis, CEO of Strike Brewing.   Right now about 10-12 show up and that number is expected to triple in the summer.  This group also does a longer run, 8-12 miles on Saturday mornings on the trail.

Jenny has even larger plans for her group which mirrors her plans for her start-up brewery  "The ultimate plan is to make the brewery the place where everyone starts and ends.  And as soon as we have a location leased, that will begin – even while we’re still building it out – that way people can watch the progress and start getting excited about beer!"  Jenny went on to add that this club is modeled like FFP running clubs,  so they plan to have more events going on in the future.

So if you're looking for a good run and good beer in the South Bay, looks like Strike Brewing is the place to be Wednesday.

The group posing on the Los Gatos High School track.  I'm told guys also show up for these runs.

Earn Your Beer at the 3rd Annual SF Beer Week Beer Run

Photo used by permission of Bryan Kolesar of www.brewlounge.com
Once again, Brian Yaeger, Bryan Kolesar and myself invite you to celebrate the unlikely union of running and beer with the 3rd Annual SF Beer Week Beer Run, as part of San Francisco Beer Week.

When? February 12th, 2012 at 11:00 am

Where? Run starts and ends at Social Kitchen and Brewery, 1326 9th Avenue, San Francisco, CA 94122.  Click here for location.

How far? The run is approximately 5 miles much of it through picturesque Golden Gate Park, with an optional beer stop at Magnolia Pub and Brewery, as indicated on the official course map.  (Sorry, the course won't be marked.) If you get lost or 5 miles is a little beyond your ability, feel free to head back anyway you want to Social Kitchen and Brewery for the post run festivities.  In the friendly spirit of the event, finishing times or places will not be kept.  As the run will be held on city sidewalks and streets, we ask all runners to obey traffic signs, stop lights, and observe other pedestrians' right of way.

What are the post run festivities?  We're glad you asked.  Each finisher of legal drinking age will get a dollar off their post-run beer(s) at Social Kitchen and Brewery.  But wait, there's also the post run raffle with lots of great prizes.  The grand prize is a $50 gift certificate to Social Kitchen and Brewery.  We'll be awarding other great prizes like "Earn Your Beer" t-shirts from Adventure Sports Journal, an East Coast Beer Basket from Bryan Kolesar and others to be determined.

For the latest list of raffle prizes, look here.

Money raised in the post run raffle will be denoted in memory of beer writer Bill Brand to the Contra Costa Food Bank and also to Autism Speaks.

Come rain or shine. Race will only be cancelled in case of severe weather.  Don't hesitate to let us know you're coming or ask any questions by posting a comment, or sending me an e-mail using a link from this page.

Look forward to seeing you there!

Discoveries from the 2nd Annual SF Beer Week Beer Run

What if they had a beer run and lots of people came? Believe it or not, this was something I worried about when Bryan Kolesar and Brian Yaeger approached me about holding the 1st Annual SF Beer Week Beer Run last year, as I have this peculiar habit of analyzing ideas in terms of worst case scenarios. What if someone got hit by a car? What if holding a run like this was actually illegal? After a day of contemplation, I realized a bunch of people getting together for a run and drinking beer afterwards was probably not going to lead to a cataclysmic disaster, and so worked together with Brian and Bryan to get the run organized.

Plenty did go wrong. A blizzard hit Philadelphia that week, and Bryan Kolesar never got a plane out of his home town. We publicized the run only a few days before the event, so very few people were actually aware of it. Of the five people who showed up, pretty much all of them got lost at some point running through Golden Gate park, and one guy had to head back to retrieve his girlfriend who was nowhere to be seen. But I think it's fair to say that despite all that, everyone had a blast, and a beer run turned out not be not such a crazy idea after all.

So this year, we figured with better organization, more people would show up to the 2nd Annual Beer Run. What we hadn't counted on was a contingent from Team in Training showing up, members of the San Francisco Road Runners coming out, that the run would be the subject of a meet-up , or that one of the runners was already organizing beer runs in San Francisco on her own. About 60 of us took over Social Kitchen that morning, proving once again, the seemingly different activities of beer and running hold some sort of resonance.

Beer has long been recognized as a social lubricant. Running, which involves more hard work than drinking beer, not so much so. But since the time I started running as a socially awkward twelve year old, I certainly recognize and appreciate how the shared effort and experiences from a run brings people together and breaks down social barriers. Unlike other sports requiring memberships, access to special facilities, or expensive equipment, if you lace up your shoes and head outside, you're a runner. And on that late Sunday morning in San Francisco, 60 of us became less of a stranger to each other.

So for those who ran that morning who might be reading this, all I can say is I hope you've felt as fortunate to join the beer run as I did.

Video of the Beer Run

A short video of the Beer Run and Toronado Barleywine Festival can be found here. I assume the mantle of the strong silent type, wisely letting Brian Yaeger do all the talking, and believe it or not, was having a much better time than it looked.

San Francisco Beer Week Beer Run: And we have lift off.....

A couple weeks ago, I get this e-mail from Brian Yaeger who tells me of his plans with Philadelphia beer blogger Bryan Kolesar of Brewlounge to organize a beer run during San Francisco Beer Week, and asking me what I thought about it. I tend to initially react to things in "worst case scenario" mode, and my initial reaction is the thought of hundreds of runners clogging the streets of San Francisco and somebody getting hit by a car. After further and more rational contemplation, it seemed like the worst thing that could possibly happen is that just the three of us would show up. That seemed pretty good, so told Brian to count me in. After hashing out plans over e-mail between San Francisco, San Jose, and Philadelphia for a few days, lo and behold, we put together a little three mile fun run that started and finished at Magnolia Pub and Brewery on Saturday, February 13th, with the course running around the Golden Gate Park pan handle, and the into Golden Gate park itself, with the turn-around point at the Conservatory of Flowers.
Now the question was, with announcements on the San Francisco Beer Week website, Brewlounge, this blog, and some grass roots marketing by Brian Yaeger just a week before the run, who was going to show up? As the days passed by, a couple RSVP's trickled in, giving us confidence that we wouldn't be doing this all by ourselves. Unfortunately, the huge Mid-Atlantic blizzard that week grounded so many flights that Bryan Kolesar simply couldn't make it to San Francisco Beer Week at all.

So I'm standing on the corner of Masonic and Haight in front of Magnolia about ten minutes before the 11 am start, and look around for anyone else who looks like they're there for the run. A couple minutes later, this guy in a green Singha Beer T-shirt and baggy shorts comes bounding down Haight Street. I figure its Brian Yaeger, and as he gets closer, I see his socks are pulled up nearly to his knees and have the word "BEER" on them, and there's no further doubt that it's Brian.

My craft beer epiphany started less than three years ago, and the geographical nature of craft beer was one of it attractions. So reading Brian's entertaining book, Red, White and Brew about his road trip to explore breweries all over the United States was a milestone on my craft beer journey, and it was indeed a privilege to meet him. We shook hands and Brian shows me the bottle caps with the words "Beer Run" on the underside to serve as tokens to get a discounted pint at Magnolia. Magnolia Head Brewmaster Dave McClean graciously helped support the run, since Dave certainly didn't need any further distractions like a bunch of sweaty runners further clogging up the packed brunch crowd with a busy brewpub to manage.

By the 11 am starting time we're joined by five others from the surrounding neighborhood: Calvin, Trey, Nicole, Devin and Sophie. (If I got a name wrong or left someone out, sorry, and don't hesitate to correct me here.) So how did it go? Well, seven people who were mostly strangers became less of strangers. We all got our recommended 30 minutes of daily exercise. And at the end, we all got to support one of our local brewers. Brian quietly bought beers for everyone, so the run was good for his Karma. And the spirit of Bryan Kolesar was with us as he wouldn't let a little snow stop him from doing his own beer run. The Beer Run turned out to be one of those small events that make the world a little better place.

The San Francisco Beer Week video crew happened to be at Magnolia when we finished, and were quite intrigued by the concept of beer run as a San Francisco Beer Week event. They shot a brief video interviewing Brian and myself. I'm glad Brian did most of the talking, since he's clearly a natural and articulate speaker, and I barely had the foggiest idea of what to say when put on the spot like that. Inside Magnolia, we met Chris and Merideth of The Beer Geek , who were also pretty interested in the concept of a beer run, and told us they'd like to participate next year, even with little or no prior running experience. At the end, Brian and I figured we probably get 40-50 people for a SF Beer Week Beer Run with a just few more weeks of advance preparation and promotion, as the Beer Run idea clearly resonates with the craft brewing community. Even for a runner like myself who enjoys craft beer, I couldn't help asking myself why.

There's the obvious connection that beer is simply great to drink after a run, since it cools you down, and provides well needed hydration and carbohydrates. A Wine Run, Whisky Run, or Cocktail Run seems rather contrived, and quite frankly, a bit ridiculous. A Beer Run just seems natural for some reason. But I think there is a deeper connection between beer and running, which has to do with the egalitarian nature of both the sport and the beverage.

One of my favorite running quotes is from an old Nike commercial: "There are clubs you can't belong to, neighborhoods you can't live in, schools you can't get into, but the roads are always open." Virtually all running clubs and races are open to anyone young or old, big or small, and do not discriminate on the basis of race, sex, origin or talent. The stop watch never plays favorites, and running is an affordable activity to all but the very lowest income levels.

The worlds finest beers are still an affordable luxury to most, and beer has a long history as the People's Beverage. Whether used as payment to workers building The Pyramids, or used as an equalizer to help ease the racial tensions in the high profile Beer Summit, beer has a long history of shedding elitism and breaking class barriers, bringing wide cross sections of society together. I find it interesting that a good pair of running shoes, running shorts, socks, and a T-shirt costs about the same as the typical home brew starter kit.

Well, enough attempts at deep thoughts for one day. I'm already getting hyped for next year's SF Beer Week's Beer Run!
